Anode Engineering manufacture their own range of permanent reference cells. Sometimes called reference electrodes, these specially designed electrochemical cells are designed with a reproducible potential, allowing it to be used as a reference point for measuring the difference between two metal / electrode voltages. This difference will indicate whether the asset (constructed of a metal) has sufficient cathodic protection to prevent or arrest corrosion. The reference cell chosen for the purpose of assessing the performance of the electrolytic corrosion prevention system is determined by the metal and electrolyte the asset is immersed in. For instance, an asset in a sea water environment would require a silver / silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) cell. The more common one used for assessing corrosion prevention systems in soil is a copper / copper sulphate cell (Cu/CuSO4). Where a less accurate measurement is required, possibly where only fault conditions need to be determined, a stabilised Zinc reference cell would suffice. Anode Engineering produce a range of reference cells to accommodate these and other conditions.
